Frequently Asked Questions
Click on a question to reveal the answer.
Q. How does using ReStore Deconstruction help my community, economy and environment?
A. You can feel good about the fact that all the materials we recover from your home are kept out of the landfill and sold at low cost to help others afford to rebuild their homes. We’re strengthening the local economy by creating green jobs and helping others rebuild their neighborhoods one house at a time. Reusing materials instead of throwing them away provides great benefits to our environment.
Q. What tax benefits do I get for choosing ReStore Deconstruction?
A. Your donation of the materials we recover from your home is a tax deductible contribution of goods to our non-profit organization, just like if you donated clothing to a non-profit thrift store. This donation might be the largest you’ll make in your lifetime! For whole home deconstruction jobs, the value of the donated materials is often in the tens of thousands of dollars.
Q. How do I get the tax benefits?
A. We’ll provide you with an itemized receipt of every item you’ve donated along with the price that we sell it for, as well as any IRS forms you’ll need from us. You or your tax advisor determine the fair market value of the donation for tax purposes, and include the information when you file your taxes. Donations valued at more than $5,000 require an appraisal, which may cost around $500 to $1000 - and we can help you arrange it. For more details, please download Publication #526 Charitable Deductions at www.irs.gov, or ask your tax advisor.
Q. How long will ReStore Deconstruction take?
A. You can depend on us to meet your scheduling needs. Deconstruction will usually not change your project schedule very much if at all. And the ReStore prides itself on finishing jobs when we’ve promised (just ask our references!). For remodeling projects, there really is no difference at all - or we’re a little faster due to the fact we specialize in this work. For whole house removal projects, we might take several weeks as opposed to the several days that a demolition company takes to do the job. But we can often start work before a demolition company would, or work in the wait time before the next phase of your project would begin.
Q. How will the cost of ReStore Deconstruction compare to demolition?
A. For pre-remodeling work, deconstruction costs the same as traditional demolition – and you get the added tax benefit. For whole house removal, deconstruction usually costs more than demolition, but the tax benefits make the difference small compared to the total cost of your project. Our whole house customers find that the small difference is worth it for the incredible environmental and community benefits they can achieve by using our services.
Q. Will my contractor want to work with ReStore Deconstruction?
A. Yes! We work with your contractor as partners in providing you with a project that meets your goals.
Q. How experienced is ReStore Deconstruction?
A. Very. We have successfully completed many dozens of jobs on time without injury since we began been doing deconstruction work since 2003. All jobs are run by our licensed Construction Site Supervisor (Dave Giese, MA license 093679 1G) using our experienced crew. We are a MA Registered Home Improvement Contractor (# 150810) and a Connecticut Home Improvement Contractor (# HIC.0673686). We would be happy to provide you with references so you can see for yourself!
Q. What will my jobsite look like during deconstruction?
A. Our jobsites are well-organized and clean. We efficiently move materials from your home to our store – it’s actually fun and interesting to watch. Take a look at our DVD to see a deconstruction job in action.
Q. Can I keep a few of the things from my house without adding cost to the job?
A. Yes. Just let us know what if anything you’d like to keep and, we will include that in our scope of work.
Q. Where does all my stuff go?
A. We’ll recover any usable items and send them to our retail store in Springfield so hard working do-it-yourselfers can buy them at low cost and fix up their homes, lives and communities. Then we recycle non-reusable wood, metal and more. Between reuse and recycling, we usually save 80% or more from disposal! The rest of the material is taken to fully permitted disposal facilities.
Q. What can you recover from my house?
A. ReStore Deconstruction will save more materials from the landfill than any other option. We save almost everything - including cabinets, windows, doors, plumbing and electrical fixtures, flooring, trim, insulation and lumber. You’ll feel great seeing truckload after truckload of useful materials being saved from disposal.
